What changed for Chrome extensions in 2026?
Manifest V2 is gone. Chrome finished turning off MV2 extensions in 2025, so anything you ship in 2026 is Manifest V3: a service worker instead of a background page, declarativeNetRequest instead of blocking web requests, and a stricter permission review. Old extensions that were never migrated no longer load.
The Side Panel API opened a new pattern: an AI assistant that sits next to the page, reads what the user is looking at, and acts on it. Most new extension work we get is one of three things: a SaaS companion, a side panel assistant on Claude or OpenAI, or data capture with the user's consent.
